RESOURCES FOR
LONG-TERM RECOVERY
AND
INDEPENDENT LIVING
The largest caregivers/case
managers/independent
living
directory on the internet
Purpose and Objective of
the Directory
The purpose
of the Self Help Resources directory is to identify free and affordable resources for recovery from
brain injury and other catastrophic illness. Websites are
included in the directory based on referrals and recommendations made
by users and consumers of the resources for long-term recovery. Recommendations for websites to be included in
the Directory should be sent to:
selfhelprecovery@usa.net.
Websites
establishing a reciprocal link with the Caregivers Directory may
add information to their Directory listing by
sending an email to
selfhelprecovery@usa.net.
The main focus of the caregivers directory is on the "post-rehabilitation (T3)"
or long-term phase
of recovery which, in the case of head injury, can take up to 20 years. A 1998 Nationa Institutes
of Health “Consensus Development Conference” on the topic Rehabilitation of
Persons with Traumatic Brain Injury found that
most approaches to TBI rehabilitation involve a traditional
medical perspective. The conference concluded that “A
major limitation within the field of TBI rehabilitation is the narrow focus of
current medical restoration approaches [and] There is little recognition that
TBI is frequently a lifetime disability with varying rehabilitation needs over
that lifetime.
The
conference found that “major financial barriers make access to TBI
rehabilitation services difficult for many individuals.”
. . . current approaches
frequently result in a sense of disenfranchisement due to a lack of shared
participation in goal development and program design. In addition, information
provided by clinicians to persons with TBI and their families is often
insufficient.
The
conference views apply as well to
closed-head injury (acquired brain injury) and catastrophic illness in general.

Acquired Brain Injury
A
neurological condition, Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) is damage to
the brain after birth. It usually affects cognitive, physical, emotional or
independent functioning and can result from traumatic brain injury (i.e.
accidents, falls, assaults, etc.) and non-traumatic brain injury (i.e. stroke,
brain tumours, infection, poisoning, hypoxia, ischemia or substance abuse). Most
definitions of ABI exclude neurodegenerative disorders. Acquired brain injury is
not to be confused with intellectual disability. People with a brain injury may
have difficulty controlling, coordinating and communicating their thoughts and
actions but they usually retain their intellectual abilities. Brain injury has
dramatically varied effects and no two people can expect the same outcome or
resulting difficulties. The brain controls every part of human life: physically,
intellectually, behaviorally and emotionally. When the brain is damaged, some
other part of a person's life will also be adversely affected. Even a mild
injury can result in a serious disability that will interfere with a person’s
daily functioning and personal activities for the rest of their life. While the
outcome of the injury depends largely on the nature and severity of the injury
itself, appropriate treatment will play a vital role in determining the level of
recovery.

Aneurysm
An aneurysm
(or aneurism) is localized, blood-filled dilation (bulge) of a blood vessel
caused by disease or weakening of the vessel wall. Aneurysms most commonly
occur in arteries at the base of the brain (the circle of Willis) and in the
aorta (the main artery coming ut of the heart)—this is an aortic aneurysm. This
bulge in a blood vessel can burst and lead to death at any time, buch like a
bulge in an over-inflated innertube. The larger an aneurysm becomes, the more
likely it is to burst.

Brain Tumor
A brain
tumor is any inracranial tumor created by abnormal and uncontrolled cell
division, normally either found in the brain itself (neurons, gllial cells,
astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, ependymal cells), lymphatic tissue, blood vessels;
in the cranial nerves (myelin-producing Schwann cells); in the brain envelopes (meninges),
skull, pituitary and pineal gland; or spread from cancers primarily located in
other organs (metastic tumors). Primary (true) brain tumors are commonly
located in the posterior cranial fossa in children and in the anterior
two-thirds of the cerebral hemispheres in adults, although they can effect any
part of the brain.
